  • President Donald Trump's approach in handling North Korea may be alleviating worries of a potential conflict.
  • Fifty-one percent of Americans approve of Trump's approach to the regime, up nine points from March and 17 points from January.
  • Despite the historical circumstance of the planned meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, only 38% of Americans believe it would make the situation better, while 19% say it would make it worse.

As a potentially historic US-North Korea summit looms, President Donald Trump's unorthodox approach to handling the regime may be alleviating worries of a potential conflict, if a new CBS News poll is any indication.

Fifty-one percent of Americans approve of Trump's handling of North Korea, up 9 points from March and 17 points from January, CBS reported Monday.

Overall, Trump's approach gained support from respondents who identify as Democrats and those who consider themselves Republican, but a noticeable partisan divide is still apparent: 90% of Republicans said they approve of Trump's handling of North Korea, while 25% of Democrats said the same, according to CBS.

Forty-nine percent of independents said they approve, up 5 points from March.

Trump also appears to be slowly easing worries of a potential conflict with North Korea; with 55% of respondents feeling uneasy about the possible conflict — down nine points from March and 17 points from 2017.

The latest figure marks the highest approval rating for Trump's response to North Korea, which turned a sharp corner after the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Following the seemingly warmed relations between South and North Korea, the regime struck a conciliatory tone with the US and extended an invitation for a meeting to Trump.

The location and date of the summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has yet to be made public, however, Trump said it would be held sometime in late May or early June. US intelligence officials have already established communications with their North Korean counterparts, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has visited the country ahead of the summit.

Despite the unprecedented scale of the meeting, only 38% of Americans believe it would make the situation better, while 19% say it would make it worse.
